Food For Thought...

As this adventure really gets rolling, it has been comforting to know that so many people have been so quick to provide their support and kind wishes.

I have never had in depth personal experiences with cancer, other than a couple of acquaintances and what many of us might refer to as "a friend of a friend". The illness and its tenticles have kind of stayed away from my family and I over the years.

Until now...

Moving forward, I have no idea what the next few weeks will bring. The "newness" of it all is kind of daunting, but in examing what I know about the process at this point, it certainly does not seem insurmountable. For the first few weeks, it will be all about my wife and I, and how we get accustomed to the routine and the effects of treatment. Thankfully, we have a wonderful relationship, 23 years in fact, but I can see that the rest of 2012 will definitely be a test for us.

Aug. 29: An IV being inserted prior to a CT Scan at the BC Cancer Agency in Kelowna. I enjoyed none of this! But, it's just another part of the thrill ride...

On another note, I have been told by a number of people in recent weeks that, "if you need anything, just call me".

Now, I understand how this is a 100% heart-felt sentiment. So, don't get me wrong. I get it! And thank you!

But I'd like people to see another perspective.

If you're asking "me" to call "you" to ask for help, there is a very good chance you will not hear from me.

For the over-sensitive types, understand this doesn't mean I'm blowing you off. It does mean you're probably already "off the hook", though. Just remember that I already feel shitty about all of this, and I'm just not the kind of guy who is going to inflict this on anyone any more by calling them up to ask them for a favor.

An approach that would work better for me would be if someone were to call and offer something specific. Sort of like, "hey, you grumpy old bastard, what time is your treatment tomorrow? I'm going to drive you there."

That would not only be a wonderful gesture, something I may occassionally need assistance with, but it would also enable me to politely say "no, thank you".

I don't expect that everbody can or will choose to wrap their brains around this logic, but hey, at least now it's out there.

More info to come...

  1. Hey Glen, I completely understand what you mean when people say call me if you need anything. That's why pushy sister said I would come visit. I can drive, cook, dance, do laundry, buy groceries, massage, listen, do pedicures, tell jokes, whatever you need. I am looking forward to coming and helping you two and bringing mom and dad! Should I bring my Rider wig? Just wondering....

  3. Going to graduate school was a positive decision for me. I enjoyed the coursework, the presentations, the fellow students, and the professors. And since my company reimbursed 100% of the tuition, the only cost that I had to pay on my own was for books and supplies. Otherwise, I received a free master’s degree. All that I had to invest was my time. massaggio olistico pescara
